What I particularly love about running my own business is networking with like-minded individuals who want to support each other. I have met many amazing women over the past few years in this way. During this unprecedented time, it is more important than ever to support small businesses so with that in mind I have invited fellow small business owners with complimentary businesses to mine to write a post/blog for my page

So to start off I would like to introduce you to Mikki Gaskell who is a motivational expert and a solutions focused coach. She helps her clients feel confident, be in control and love their life. Her clients come from all walks of life but have the same fundamental desires – to live a life that they love and move forward with clarity and confidence.

5 STRATEGIES TO HELP YOU COPE WITH LOCKDOWN

1) Create a Healthy, Supportive Routine

When we’re feeling powerless or helpless, creating a routine or schedule gives us a sense of control and mastery over our environment and life circumstances. Being at home for an extended period of time inevitably leads to the feeling of one day blending into another. A routine can offer an anchor and a greater sense of control over our lives.

When creating your routine, try to include the following: food preparation, social time, exercise and outdoor time, as well as activities you can benefit from, such as learning or creativity.

It’s also important to recognise weekends and make a looser schedule for them. For example, you could include: sleeping in and later bedtime; brunch; a virtual happy hour with friends or colleagues; a larger project, such as art, craft, gardening or home redecoration.

2) Prepare for the “New Normal”

Rather than watching the news continually throughout the day, you can choose to focus on your future. Right now is an opportunity to think about how you want your future to look.

Having a clear vision of how you want your life to be is a powerful motivator. A vision helps you work towards your goals, take action and make change.

Here are 5 questions to think about when exploring your life vision:

  • What do you desire or yearn for in your life?
  • How do you want to feel?
  • Which things do you really want to be different in your life?
  • What would happen in 3 years’ time that would make your life wonderful and you feel magnificent about yourself?
  • What’s your dream for this lifetime?

3) Do Things That You Enjoy & Laugh

Make sure that you do something that you enjoy every day – whether it’s gardening, cooking, singing, reading, whatever it is that lights you up – ensure that you carve the time out for it  each day, even if it’s for just 15 minutes.

Laughter releases positive chemicals in our bloodstream (Endorphins, our natural “happy” drug and Dopamine, part of our bodily “reward” system) So in addition to doing something you love, find ways to incorporate laughter into your day to day:

  • What are your favourite comedy shows?
  • Is there a comedian you like?
  • Netflix, Youtube and similar have a huge number of options

4) De-Clutter

Getting organized and de-cluttering allows us to exert some control over our lives – and of course it feels wonderful when it’s done.

Most of us have organisational things on our to-do list that have been there for a while (such as going through winter clothes, sorting out toys to donate, tidying the garage or shed) Use this isolation period to get them done!

Organise your closets, your garage, books, photos, office, kitchen equipment – whatever needs organising. Or perhaps you need to go through your receipts or file your taxes, whatever is on your list. Remember that you don’t need to do it all in one sitting, carve out whatever amount of time a day that you can and you will soon see the results.

5) Be Kind

Kindness and compassion are one of the most powerful tools we have right now. Under lockdown and with the fear that you or a loved is at risk, it’s natural for feelings of anxiety and stress to set in.

  • Use kindness to comfort yourself when you’re afraid or feeling anxious. Be gentle. Imagine you’re soothing a friend, a young child or an animal who is afraid – what would you say to them?
  • Use kindness to give yourself – and others – the benefit or the doubt. Instead of getting upset when you see other people behaving badly, remember that we all do foolish or rash things when we’re scared.
  • Imagine you have a kind, wise self. A part of you that is unflappable, intelligent and unconditionally loves ALL of you. When you need it, imagine that kind, wise self is with you, supporting you, may be giving you a hug – and saying exactly what you need to hear.
